The FLIR Ocean Scout Pro is the handheld marine thermal night vision monocular – the portable thermal imaging device that gives boat captains and crew members instant on-demand thermal vision without the cost or install effort of a permanently-mounted thermal camera system like the FLIR M-Series. Where the M-Series cameras are mounted on the radar arch and viewed via the boat’s chartplotter screen, the Ocean Scout Pro is a handheld unit that you grab when you need it – meaningful for search-and-rescue scenarios where you’re walking the boat looking for a person in the water, for nighttime navaid identification when entering an unfamiliar harbor, or as an emergency backup if the boat’s mounted thermal camera fails.

Why thermal monoculars matter for boat operations. Thermal cameras detect heat emitted by objects rather than reflected visible light. At night on the water, thermal cameras let you see things that the eye cannot: people in the water (warm body, cold water – high contrast), other boats running with no nav lights (hot exhaust, hot engine, body heat of crew), floating debris (slightly different temperature than the surrounding water), shoreline detail (warmer or cooler than the water depending on time of day), navigation aids and channel markers (thermal contrast against the cold sky or warm shoreline). For boat operations in fog, heavy rain, glare, or full darkness, thermal vision is meaningful safety capability that the human eye and traditional optics can’t provide.

640 x 480 thermal sensor – meaningfully sharper than entry-level options. The Ocean Scout Pro’s 640 x 480 thermal sensor is meaningfully higher resolution than the 320 x 240 sensor used in entry-level thermal cameras. The resolution difference matters for two reasons. One: target identification. At 640 x 480, you can identify what a thermal target actually is (person versus seal versus floating debris) at meaningful range. At 320 x 240, the same target shows up but as a less-distinct thermal blob – you know something is there but can’t always tell what. Two: effective range. The Ocean Scout Pro’s 500-meter human-target detection range is roughly 2x the typical entry-level thermal monocular range, made possible by the higher pixel count.

30 Hz refresh rate. The thermal image refreshes at 30 frames per second – smooth real-time video view. Cheaper thermal monoculars run at 9 Hz (3.3-frame-per-second updates), which gives noticeably laggy frame rendering when the operator pans the camera. The 30 Hz refresh on the Ocean Scout Pro lets you sweep the camera quickly across an area without the laggy lag-and-catch-up artifacts of slower refresh rates. Useful for search-and-rescue scanning where you want to cover a large area quickly without missing targets between frame updates.

Wide 32-degree field of view. The 32-degree FOV is meaningfully wider than typical thermal scopes (which often run 12-18 degree FOV for longer-range identification). The wider FOV is the right choice for marine area-scanning applications: you cover more water per scan motion, you find targets faster in unknown locations, and the wider scene context helps the operator orient to landmarks while looking for thermal contrasts. For specifically long-range target identification (where narrow FOV gives more zoom and better detail), the Ocean Scout Pro is suboptimal – but for the typical marine use cases (find a person in the water, identify a navaid, scan a coastline), wide FOV is the right call.

500-meter human-target detection range. The 500-meter (1,640 ft) detection range is the typical-conditions distance at which the Ocean Scout Pro can detect a human-sized warm target against cold water. Real-world detection range varies meaningfully with conditions: warm body in cold water gives strong thermal contrast and longer effective range. warm air or warm water reduces the contrast and shortens range. The 500-meter rating is the recreational-use spec – meaningful for search-and-rescue scenarios where you’re scanning the water for a person who fell overboard.

Four color palette modes. The Ocean Scout Pro displays the thermal image in four selectable color palettes. White-hot: warm objects show as white, cold as black – the traditional thermal display look. Black-hot: inverted – warm objects black, cold objects white. Red-hot: warm objects in red against gray background – useful for picking out warm targets quickly. Rainbow / iron: the multi-color spectrum – shows fine temperature gradations useful for distinguishing very subtle thermal differences. Different palettes work better for different scenarios – white-hot is the typical default for general use, red-hot is meaningful for fast threat identification (warm = potentially a person or boat), iron is meaningful for detail work (subtle thermal patterns visible).

Intuitive 4-button control panel. The Ocean Scout Pro keeps the controls simple: 4 buttons handle all the necessary functions (power, palette select, zoom, image capture). No complex multi-level menus, no obscure button combinations, no learning curve for operators in high-stress situations. Even crew members who haven’t used the unit before can pick it up and operate it correctly within seconds – meaningful for emergency scenarios where the typical operator may not be the boat’s captain.

Single-handed operation. The unit’s ergonomic design lets the operator grip it in one hand while keeping the other hand free for boat operation, communications, or holding onto the boat in rough conditions. The wrist lanyard prevents accidental drops overboard. The eye cup design lets the operator view the high-resolution viewfinder with one eye while keeping the other eye on the surrounding scene with normal vision – meaningful for maintaining situational awareness while using the thermal camera.

IP67 waterproof + 2-meter drop protection. The IP67 rating means the unit is sealed against dust ingress and protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter depth for 30 minutes. Survives accidental drops in the water without damage. The 2-meter drop protection means the unit handles drops onto hard surfaces from 2 meters height without internal damage. Both ratings are meaningful for the marine environment where dropped equipment and water exposure are routine.

6-hour battery runtime. The internal lithium-ion battery delivers up to 6 hours of continuous use per charge. Sufficient for any single fishing day or overnight passage’s expected thermal-camera use. Charging is via the included USB-C cable from any standard 5V USB port (boat USB outlet, USB-equipped 12V adapter, or shore-side wall charger). The lithium-ion battery is internal and not user-replaceable – eventually it’ll need factory service for battery replacement, but typical battery service intervals are 5-10 years.

Wireless video streaming via FLIR Scout Pro app (iOS). The Ocean Scout Pro can stream live video to a paired iPhone or iPad running the free FLIR Scout Pro app. Useful for collaborative search-and-rescue (multiple crew members can see the thermal feed on their phones), for documenting the thermal feed during an incident, or for remote monitoring while the operator focuses on boat handling. Note: iOS only – the app isn’t available for Android. For Android phone users, the Ocean Scout Pro’s standalone capability is fully functional, just without the wireless streaming option.

Image and video capture. The unit captures still images and short video clips to internal storage. Transfer captured files to a connected computer via the USB-C cable, or transfer to an iPhone / iPad via the Scout Pro app. Useful for documenting incidents (Coast Guard SAR operations, evidence of nighttime hazards, navaid documentation for chart corrections) or for sharing capability demonstrations.

Included accessories.
