Three separate pieces of equipment – pure sine wave inverter, multi-stage battery charger, automatic AC transfer relay – integrated into one compact marine-grade enclosure with NMEA 2000 network integration so the helm display can show inverter status alongside everything else on the boat.

What this product replaces. Traditionally a cruising boat needed three separate items: a 2000W pure sine wave inverter to make 120 VAC from house battery, a 100-amp shore-power battery charger to top up the house bank from dock power, and an AC transfer switch (usually manual) to move the AC distribution panel between shore input and inverter output. Three boxes, three sets of wiring, three sets of failure points. The Freedom XC PRO combines all three into one unit, with the transfer switch becoming fully automatic and the inverter and charger sharing the same DC-side wiring to the battery bank. Net effect: simpler install, less wall space consumed, single point of monitoring, and roughly 30-40% lower total cost vs three separate components.

True pure sine wave matters. Cheaper inverters output modified sine wave (stepped square wave) AC, which works for resistive loads (incandescent lights, simple heaters) but causes real problems with sensitive electronics and motor loads. Microwave ovens run at 2/3 power on modified sine. Refrigerator compressors run hot and have shortened motor life. CPAP machines throw error codes. LED TVs buzz and may damage their power supplies over time. Laptop power supplies tolerate it but inverter chargers and battery chargers behave erratically. Pure sine wave output – what the XC PRO produces – is electrically identical to shore power or generator output, so every appliance and electronic device works exactly as designed. For a cruising boat where you’re running anything more than basic lights and 12V devices, pure sine wave is required.

The 100-amp charger with power factor correction. The integrated battery charger pumps up to 100 amps at 14.4 V into the house bank during the bulk charging stage – aggressive enough to recharge a 600-800 Ah lithium house bank in a single afternoon at dock, or a comparable lead-acid bank overnight on shore power. The power factor correction (PFC) on the charger input side is the under-appreciated feature: PFC makes the charger pull current from shore power as a clean sine wave aligned in phase with the input voltage, which means the breaker only sees the actual power being consumed. Non-PFC chargers pull current in narrow pulses that look like much higher peak current to the breaker – and trip 30A shore-power pedestals when you’re only actually consuming 20A average. PFC is what lets you charge a big bank on 30A service without nuisance breaker trips.

Multi-stage charging algorithm. The charger runs three-stage charging (bulk / absorption / float) with temperature compensation for any of: flooded lead-acid, AGM, gel, and lithium-ion battery chemistries. Charging profiles are individually configurable for each chemistry via the optional Bluetooth remote panel – you set bulk voltage, absorption voltage, absorption time, float voltage, and temperature compensation coefficient to match the battery manufacturer’s published charging spec exactly. Battery equalization mode (for flooded banks only) periodically over-charges the bank to remix the electrolyte and prevent sulfation – typically 8-hour cycle once a month or per battery manufacturer recommendation. Dead-battery recovery from 0 VDC handles deeply-discharged banks that conventional chargers refuse to start charging because they don’t see a battery voltage to detect.

The 50-amp AC transfer switch. When shore power or generator AC is present at the inverter’s AC input, the built-in 50-amp transfer relay senses the incoming power and within 20 milliseconds switches the AC distribution panel from inverter output to the incoming AC source. When shore power drops (you unplug, the dock breaker trips, the generator stops), the relay senses the loss and switches back to inverter output – again within 20 ms, which is fast enough that most appliances see no interruption and equipment with internal capacitor reserves (computers, modern TVs) don’t even blink. The Xantrex Bluetooth remote panel (model 808-0817-02, sold separately) plugs into the inverter and adds Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity so the Xantrex mobile app on iOS or Android can configure all inverter settings, monitor status in real time, and pull historical data. Critical for boats where the inverter is buried in an engine room locker and you don’t want to crawl back there every time you need to check status. The Bluetooth remote is highly recommended for any serious install – the LED indicators on the inverter itself are minimal.

Operating temperature range. -4°F to 104°F (-20°C to 40°C) at full output is the spec – and it’s marine-realistic, not lab-conditions optimistic. The XC PRO maintains rated output through the actual temperature swing a marine engine room sees from a winter cold-soak in a freshwater marina to a Caribbean dog-day in the engine compartment at noon. Thermal protection circuits kick in above 104°F to derate output gradually rather than just shutting off, so the inverter keeps running at reduced capacity if you exceed the rating rather than failing entirely.

Other practical features. Ignition control input lets you wire the inverter to the boat’s ignition key (or main battery switch) so the inverter automatically powers off when the key is off, preventing the inverter’s idle current draw (about 1 amp at 12 V) from slowly drawing down the bank when the boat is unattended. Programmable AC under-voltage shutdown (settable 85-110 VAC) lets you operate under weak shore power conditions where the dock voltage sags – the inverter will continue working until shore voltage drops below your set threshold, then disconnects from shore power and runs from battery instead. Power Share feature limits total AC input current to a programmable maximum, prioritizing AC loads over charger current so the charger automatically backs off when AC loads spike high enough to threaten the shore power breaker.
