The Uflex Zero Torque Feedback (ZTF) Tiller for Yamaha 90/115/130 HP four-stroke outboards (2015 and newer) solves the high-torque steering fatigue that comes with running a 4-stroke tiller-steered boat. The ZTF Tiller uses a hydraulic lock-and-release valve to prevent propeller torque from reaching your hand at the tiller handle when you’re not actively steering. Push or pull on the end of the handle to open the valve and steer normally. Release the handle and the valve closes, locking the motor on its current heading without your hand fighting the prop torque all day. The mechanical and hydrodynamic problem the ZTF Tiller solves: modern four-stroke outboards in the 90-130 HP class generate significant propeller torque (the rotational force the prop exerts back on the steering system) at typical operating speeds. On a tiller-steered boat, that torque transfers directly into the tiller handle, meaning the operator’s hand is constantly fighting the prop trying to twist the motor toward one side. Over a long day on the water, that becomes meaningful wrist and forearm fatigue. The ZTF Tiller eliminates the issue.
How the Zero Torque Feedback works. The ZTF Tiller assembly contains an internal hydraulic valve that locks the steering position when the operator’s hand isn’t actively pushing or pulling on the tiller end. With the valve closed, the prop torque cannot transfer through the tiller to your hand – the motor stays pointed where you set it, and your hand sits on the tiller end without strain. When you push or pull on the tiller end (the normal steering motion), the hydraulic valve opens automatically, allowing the steering system to move freely so you can steer the boat. Release pressure on the tiller, the valve closes again, and the new steering position is locked. The transition is seamless – no buttons, no levers, no manual mode-switch.
The fishing-day result. With a conventional tiller on a high-torque four-stroke, after an hour of running and steering through a fishing day, your wrist and forearm muscles are tired from constantly resisting the prop torque. By the end of the day, you’ve expended significant energy just on steering rather than on actually fishing. With the ZTF Tiller, that wrist load disappears – your hand sits on the tiller end relaxed when you’re holding heading, and only works when you’re actively changing direction. Why this is needed on four-strokes specifically. Two-stroke outboards (the dominant tiller-steered outboard technology before the four-stroke transition) generate less prop torque per HP than four-strokes do. The two-stroke fishing boats most owners grew up running had manageable tiller torque even at high HP. Modern four-stroke outboards produce significantly more torque per HP, plus deliver torque more consistently across the RPM range. The result is that switching from a high-HP two-stroke tiller boat to a comparable HP four-stroke tiller boat means meaningfully more torque load on the steering. The ZTF Tiller compensates for the difference.
Hydraulic valve design. The hydraulic mechanism inside the ZTF Tiller is sealed and self-contained – no external hydraulic lines, no separate pump, no fluid reservoir to monitor. The hydraulic fluid stays inside the tiller assembly for the life of the unit. The valve operates on differential pressure: prop torque applies pressure to one side of the valve (which seals it shut), and operator hand pressure on the tiller end applies pressure to the other side (which opens it). The mechanical design is straightforward and reliable – no electronics to fail, no pump to wear out.
Drop-in install on existing Yamaha tiller geometry. The ZTF Tiller installs in place of the OEM Yamaha tiller using the same mounting points and the same steering linkage interface. Remove the existing OEM tiller, install the ZTF Tiller, you’re done. No engine modifications required, no additional plumbing, no electrical hookup. Total install time is typically 1-2 hours for someone with reasonable mechanical skill on outboards. The Yamaha-specific Y1 variant ensures the install matches your engine without adapter pieces or modification.

Throttle response and shift response stay identical to the OEM tiller setup – the ZTF system only affects the steering torque, not the engine controls.
What this isn’t. It’s not a hydraulic steering system (those replace the tiller entirely with a steering wheel and helm pump). It’s not power steering (no electric assist motor). It’s not a fix for cable-steered boats (those have entirely different geometry). It’s specifically a Uflex tiller upgrade for boats that want to keep tiller steering but want to eliminate the high-torque fatigue of running a high-HP four-stroke outboard from the tiller.
