The Uflex X52 (MPN X52, UPC 702755022237) is the tilt mechanism for Ultraflex steering helms – lets you tilt the steering wheel up or down across a 48-degree range with 5 detent locking positions for comfortable wheel position regardless of operator height or seating preference. Compatible with Ultraflex tilt-mount rotary helms (the standard mechanical cable steering helms most boats use), Ultraflex tilt-mount rack-and-pinion steering helms (the more precise heavy-duty mechanical helms), and Ultraflex tilt-mount hydraulic pumps (for hydraulic steering installations) – EXCEPT SilverSteer and MasterDrive steering systems which have their own integrated tilt mechanisms. Includes all required mounting hardware for typical installations. 48-degree tilt range is meaningful – covers the full range from nearly horizontal wheel position (for standing operation, classic captain’s stance) to nearly vertical wheel position (for seated operation in modern helm chairs). 5 detent locking positions hold the wheel at the chosen angle without slipping under steering loads – turn the locking lever, position the wheel, lock the lever. The X52 is a service / replacement / upgrade part – replaces a failed tilt mechanism on an existing Ultraflex helm, or adds tilt capability to a previously non-tilt Ultraflex helm where the helm itself is tilt-compatible. Standard equipment compatibility means most Uflex helm owners can install the X52 without special adapters. Made by Uflex USA – the U.S. arm of the Italian Ultraflex group, the global manufacturer of marine steering systems known for the cable and rack-and-pinion steering installed on the majority of pleasure boats in production.
The Uflex X52 is the tilt mechanism for Ultraflex steering helms – a service / replacement / upgrade part that adds or restores tilt capability to compatible Ultraflex helms. For boat owners whose existing helm tilt mechanism has failed (loose, won’t lock, won’t tilt), or for owners adding tilt capability to a non-tilt Ultraflex helm install, the X52 is the standard part to specify.
What a tilt mechanism does and why you want one. Boat steering helms are typically mounted at a fixed angle – the steering wheel pivots on a horizontal axis fixed to the dash. Without tilt capability, the wheel angle is whatever the boat builder chose at install time, regardless of whether that’s comfortable for the specific operator. With tilt capability, the wheel can be repositioned across a range of angles to match operator preference, seating position, or operating conditions. Practical benefits: shorter operators can tilt the wheel up for better visibility over the dash, taller operators can tilt down for more legroom, standing operators (typical at the helm of a center console at speed) can have the wheel at a different angle than seated operators (at the same helm at idle / cruising), and operators with limited mobility can position the wheel for easier reach. For helm configurations where multiple operators of different heights use the boat (family boats, charter operations, club boats), tilt capability is significant comfort upgrade.
48-degree tilt range. The X52 provides 48 degrees of tilt range from full-down to full-up positions. To put that in context: 48 degrees covers the practical range from nearly horizontal wheel position (classic standing captain’s stance, common on center consoles) to nearly vertical wheel position (modern automotive-style seated operation, common on cruiser-style boats with helm chairs). Most operators end up using the wheel somewhere in the middle of the range – the wide tilt range gives you flexibility to find your specific preferred position without being constrained by limited tilt geometry.
5 locking detent positions. The mechanism has 5 detent positions across the 48-degree tilt range – approximately one position every 9-12 degrees. Detents lock the wheel at the chosen angle so it doesn’t move under steering loads, wave motion, or normal operation. To change position: release the locking lever, tilt the wheel to the next detent, lock the lever. The 5-position design strikes a balance between fine adjustment (more positions = finer adjustment but more complex mechanism) and reliable locking (fewer positions = larger gap between positions but more positive lock at each detent). 5 positions covers the typical range of operator preferences with reliable locking at each position.
Compatible Ultraflex helm types. The X52 fits these Ultraflex tilt-mount helms: (1) Rotary helms – the standard mechanical cable steering helms found on most outboard and stern-drive boats (single-cable steering). The X52 attaches between the helm and the dash mount. (2) Rack-and-pinion helms – the heavier-duty mechanical steering helms used on larger boats and applications requiring more torque. The X52 attaches between the helm and the dash mount. (3) Hydraulic pump helms – the helm pumps for hydraulic steering systems (where the helm pump produces hydraulic pressure that drives a steering ram at the engine). The X52 attaches between the helm pump and the dash mount.
Important compatibility exceptions. The X52 does NOT fit Ultraflex SilverSteer systems or Ultraflex MasterDrive steering systems. These steering systems have integrated tilt mechanisms designed specifically for the system architecture, and use proprietary mounting that doesn’t accept the standard X52. For SilverSteer or MasterDrive boats requiring tilt repair, look up the specific tilt parts for your system in the Ultraflex / Uflex parts catalog. For all other standard Ultraflex tilt-mount helms (the vast majority of installations), the X52 is the correct part.
What’s included. The X52 ships as the tilt mechanism itself plus all standard mounting hardware needed for typical installations: mounting bolts, washers, locking hardware. don’t included: the steering helm itself (you’re adding the X52 to an existing helm, or replacing a failed tilt mechanism on an existing helm), steering cable or hydraulic plumbing (re-use existing), or the dash mount bracket (re-use existing dash mounting). For custom installations with non-standard mounting requirements, additional hardware may be needed – contact Uflex USA customer service with your specific install scenario.
Install considerations. Plan for 1-3 hours for an experienced installer for a replacement install, longer for a new install adding tilt capability to a previously non-tilt helm. Tasks for replacement: (1) Disconnect the steering cable or hydraulic lines from the helm – mark / photograph the configuration first for proper reconnection. (2) Remove the existing tilt mechanism or non-tilt mounting hardware. (3) Install the X52 tilt mechanism between the helm and the dash mount using the supplied hardware. (4) Reattach the steering cable or hydraulic lines. (5) Test tilt operation through all 5 positions and verify reliable locking at each. (6) Test steering function on the water before declaring the install complete.
When to replace your existing tilt mechanism. Common failure modes for older Uflex tilt mechanisms: (1) Locking lever won’t hold position – the wheel slips under steering loads, tilting freely instead of staying locked. Usually wear in the detent locking pins or springs. (2) Tilt motion is rough or binds – typically grease degradation in the pivot mechanism, sometimes corrosion. (3) Mounting hardware corrosion – stainless or marine-grade hardware on the original install has corroded out, mechanism wobbles or doesn’t mount securely. (4) Visible damage from impact or wear. The X52 replaces all of these failure modes with a fresh mechanism – economical fix vs replacing the entire helm.
