Maxwell’s RC12-10 vertical capstan windlass in the 24V configuration. Handles 3/8 in (10 mm) short-link chain plus 5/8 to 3/4 in (16-20 mm) three-strand or 8-plait rope through the patented Wave Design chain wheel. Same RC12 chassis and Active Latch Ratchet System as the RC12-12, sized for the smaller 3/8 in chain that’s typical on 30-50 ft cruisers.

The RC12-10 is Maxwell’s vertical-capstan windlass in the RC series, configured for 3/8 inch chain and 3/4 to 7/8 inch rope. It’s the windlass owners of 30-to-65-foot (10-to-20-meter) cruisers and sport-fishers spec when they want the capstan-drum advantage (warping lines, snubbing, fender-line handling) without giving up the Wave Design rope/chain handling that the RC line is known for.

The Wave Design chain wheel is Maxwell’s patented contribution to rope/chain rode handling. Traditional gypsy designs handle either chain or rope cleanly but stutter at the chain-to-rope splice, the joint where most rope/chain windlasses jam or skip. The Wave Design profile is shaped so chain seats cleanly in the gypsy pockets and rope flows over the same surface without slipping. The splice transitions smoothly without operator intervention. For owners with mixed rope/chain rodes (the typical setup on a 30-65 ft cruiser), the Wave Design is the single feature that justifies the Maxwell over competing windlasses.

Maximum pull is 3500 pounds (1590 kg), which is the working load on the rode when the windlass is retrieving anchor in normal conditions. Static hold is 2200 pounds (4840 kg, this is force, not mass), the dead load the windlass can hold against without slipping when the motor isn’t running. As Maxwell notes prominently in the install documentation, the windlass should never be the only thing holding the anchor while at anchor, the rode should be belayed to a chain stopper or snubber to take the load off the windlass during anchoring, which extends windlass life substantially.

Chain retrieval speed at normal working load is 50 feet per minute (15 m/min). Rope retrieval speed is 43 feet per minute (13 m/min). For a typical anchorage with 100 to 150 feet of rode out, that’s a two-to-three-minute retrieval, which is the pace owners actually want, fast enough to not stand around watching the bow rise, slow enough to keep control if the rode gets fouled on bottom structure.

The 24V DC supply with the 1200-watt motor is sized to run on the boat’s house bank during anchor retrieval. The current draw at full load is substantial (the motor draws about 100 amps at peak), so the install requires appropriate cable size from the bank to the motor, plus a 100-amp breaker or fuse for protection. Maxwell’s install documentation specifies the minimum cable cross-section for typical install distances.

The 75:1 single-stage gearbox is the architectural choice that defines the RC line. Single-stage means fewer moving parts, fewer wear points, less mechanical noise, and smoother power delivery than the multi-stage gearboxes some competitors use. The single 75:1 reduction also takes up less anchor-locker space, which matters in tight installations where the space below decks is constrained.

The double cone-type brake/clutch is Maxwell’s signature feature for free-fall anchoring. Disengage the cone clutch with the included winch handle, and the rode pays out at a controlled rate gravity-driven, no motor work needed. Cone clutches (vs. dog clutches on cheaper windlasses) engage progressively rather than abruptly, which means the operator can modulate how quickly the rode pays out, and re-engage smoothly under load without the jerk that defines dog-clutch designs.

The Active Latch Ratchet System is the emergency feature: a one-way ratchet engaged with a lever that prevents the windlass from backwinding during manual retrieval. If the boat’s electrical system fails and you need to haul anchor with the manual handle, the ratchet holds the rode between handle strokes so the rode doesn’t pay back out between pumps. This is a major safety feature on a cruising boat, the difference between a manageable emergency and an unmanageable one.

Construction is full marine-grade AISI 316 stainless steel for every exposed component: deck plate, chain pipe cover, heavy-duty pressure arm, stripper arm, chain wheel, and fluted capstan drum. The fluted capstan drum is the warping-line advantage, the flutes provide grip on lines wrapped around the drum for handling dock lines, fender lines, or warping the boat in tight quarters.

What’s in the box. The RC12-10 windlass assembly, the through-deck hawse pipe, the manual override handle, mounting hardware, the chain wheel, the capstan drum, the gasket and seal kit, and the documentation pack. The 100-amp breaker, the main DC cabling, the chain stopper, and any switch panel hardware are not included and are spec’d to the install.
