The Humminbird XM-14-HW-MSI-T (model 710292-1) is the transom-mount MEGA SI+ / DI+ Dual Spectrum CHIRP transducer with built-in temperature sensor designed for use with Humminbird APEX and SOLIX MEGA SI+ G2 and G3 control heads. MEGA Side Imaging+ for high-detail side-scan imagery out to 800 feet per side at 455 kHz (or 250 feet per side at 800 kHz, or 400 feet per side at MEGA frequencies for highest detail). MEGA Down Imaging+ for high-detail down imagery at the same frequency options. Dual Spectrum CHIRP traditional 2D sonar for fish-arch and bottom imagery down to 1200 feet. Built-in temperature sensor delivers water temp data alongside depth on the chartplotter. 20-foot cable with the 14-pin connector standard on the SOLIX and APEX displays.
What this transducer does. Three sonar functions in one transom-mountable body. MEGA Side Imaging+ shows the bottom and structure out to either side of the boat with photo-quality detail. the higher the frequency, the more detail at shorter range. MEGA Down Imaging+ shows the photo-quality straight-down view of what’s directly below the boat. Dual Spectrum CHIRP delivers the traditional 2D fish-arch sonar with CHIRP modulation for tight target separation. Three sonar views from one transducer install, no separate transom installs needed for each function.
The frequency options give you tradeoffs between detail and range. At 455 kHz, MEGA SI+ reaches up to 800 feet per side and DI+ reaches 400 feet straight down ,the longest-range option but with the lowest detail. At 800 kHz, the range drops to 250 feet per side and 250 feet down with significantly higher detail. At MEGA frequencies (around 1.2 MHz), range drops further to 400 feet per side and 200 feet down but the detail is photo-quality with individual fish, baitfish schools, and structure features sharply defined. Switch frequencies via the chartplotter based on what you’re fishing: lower frequencies for offshore search at distance, higher frequencies for inshore detail work.
Dual Spectrum CHIRP traditional sonar covers the broader 2D sonar function. Full Dual Spectrum operates at 150 to 220 kHz combining narrow-beam tight-target separation with wide-beam coverage. Narrow Dual Spectrum at 180 to 240 kHz focuses on fish identification and bottom hardness reading. Wide Dual Spectrum at 140 to 200 kHz covers more of the water column for searching. Maximum Dual Spectrum CHIRP depth is 1200 feet, which covers any practical inshore and most offshore depths. For very deep offshore CHIRP work in 1500+ feet of water, the higher-power 1kW CHIRP transducers in the Humminbird ecosystem reach further.
Built-in temperature sensor delivers water temp data on the chartplotter alongside depth and the various sonar views. Water temp is the most useful single piece of data for finding feeding fish: most species have preferred temperature ranges and the boundaries between water masses are concentration points for bait and game fish. The integrated temp sensor saves you from needing a separate transducer just for water temperature. Speed sensor is not included in this model. for boats that want speed-through-water data via transducer, look at the speed-equipped variants of the Humminbird transducer line.
Compatibility is specifically with the APEX line and the SOLIX CHIRP MEGA SI+ G2 and G3 models. The 14-pin connector on the transducer cable matches the connector on those head units. For HELIX models, this transducer is not the right pairing. HELIX-specific transducers with the 9-pin connector are the right choice for HELIX installs. Confirm your specific head unit accepts the 14-pin XM-series transducer cable before ordering. SOLIX G1 (without the MEGA SI+ designation) is also not compatible.
The 20-foot cable is sized for typical small-to-medium boat installs from the transom-mounted transducer to the helm-mounted chartplotter. For longer cable runs (large center consoles, sportfish boats, sailboats), Humminbird sells extension cables sized to add reach. Extensions add some signal attenuation, so use the shortest cable run that works for your install.
Rugged composite design with all-metal mounting bracket is the construction story. The composite transducer body resists impact damage from submerged objects (the kind of impact that destroys cheaper plastic-housing transducers). The all-metal mounting bracket handles the cyclic load of mounting on a transom that flexes under hull-pounding waves at planing speed. Together they deliver a transducer that survives the full marine environment for years without the housing cracks or bracket fatigue that ruin lesser transducers.
Mounting on the transom. Pick a position about 7.5 inches from the prop centerline (further is better) and on the side that minimizes prop turbulence interference with the sonar beam. The transducer should sit so the bottom face is roughly aligned with the bottom of the hull at rest, with the kick-up adjustment in the bracket allowing fine-tuning of the angle to keep the transducer in clean water at planing speeds. Detailed mounting instructions are in the install manual. Use marine-grade sealant on the through-transom mounting holes.
Wiring. Run the 20-foot cable from the transom up to the helm where it plugs into the back of the SOLIX or APEX head unit. The 14-pin connector keys to a specific orientation. insert and twist the locking ring to secure. Most installs route the cable along the gunwale or through the boat’s existing wire chase to keep it protected and out of sight.
What this transducer isn’t. It is not a HELIX-compatible transducer (the 14-pin connector is for SOLIX and APEX). It is not a thru-hull transducer (this is transom-mount. for displacement powerboats and cruising sailboats that need flush bottom flow, look at the Humminbird thru-hull transducer line). It is not the trolling-motor-mount variant (a different transducer SKU pairs with trolling motor mounts). It is not the MEGA Live live-scanning sonar transducer (which is a different product for forward-facing live sonar).
