The Garmin GPSMAP 1243xsv is the 12-inch all-in-one chartplotter and fishfinder built around the GPSMAP X3 platform. Edge-to-edge IPS display, faster processor than the previous GPSMAP generation, built-in 1kW CHIRP plus Ultra HD SideVu and ClearVu scanning sonar, Panoptix and LiveScope-ready, and Garmin Navionics+ charts preloaded for US and Canada inland and coastal waters.
The Garmin GPSMAP 1243xsv is the 12-inch chartplotter / fishfinder combo from the GPSMAP X3 platform, the current generation of Garmin’s serious-fishing all-in-one MFD line. The xsv designation means it has the high-power 1kW CHIRP transmit plus Ultra HD SideVu and ClearVu scanning sonar built into the unit, no external sonar module required. Add a transducer (sold separately) and you’ve got a complete sonar and chartplotter system for offshore and big-water fishing.
The 12-inch screen is the right size for most center consoles, walk-arounds, and convertibles where 10-inch is too small for split-screen sonar work and 16-inch eats too much dash space. It’s the popular sweet spot for serious-fishing helms. The IPS display panel has wide viewing angles and stays readable through polarized sunglasses, which is the failure mode of cheaper non-IPS marine displays. The X3 platform refreshes the display with edge-to-edge cover glass for a cleaner look and a smaller unit footprint than the previous GPSMAP 1242 generation, which makes retrofit installs easier on dashes that were sized for older units.
Sonar capability is the headline. Built-in 1kW CHIRP for traditional 2D sonar with deep-water reach, plus Ultra HD SideVu and ClearVu scanning sonars for high-resolution structure imaging. The Ultra HD frequency range delivers sharper imagery than the previous generation SideVu and ClearVu, especially at the longer ranges where less powerful units start to lose detail. Vivid color palettes help separate fish from structure on the screen.
Panoptix and LiveScope live sonar support is built in. Add a Panoptix or LiveScope transducer (sold separately) and you get real-time live imagery of fish moving in front of, around, or below the boat. LiveScope is the live-imaging sonar that reshaped tournament bass fishing, and the GPSMAP 1243xsv is the chartplotter on the high-end side that drives it. For boats that want the full Garmin sonar ecosystem, this MFD plus a LiveScope transducer is the build. You won’t need a separate sonar processor.
Charts. Preloaded with Garmin Navionics+ for US and Canada inland and coastal waters, including Auto Guidance+ technology for automatic safe-route generation. The Navionics+ subscription is the upgrade over the older preloaded BlueChart or LakeVu chart families and includes a 1-year subscription for downloadable daily updates. Optional upgrade to Garmin Navionics Vision+ adds high-resolution relief shading, satellite imagery, and sonar imagery overlay.
Sailing features are bundled in via Garmin Sailassist for cruising sailboats and racing boats. Laylines, race start line guidance, enhanced wind rose, true wind data fields, polar tables for sail trim guidance, and tide / current / time slider. For sailors running a chartplotter at the helm, the Sailassist features are meaningful and aren’t add-on software.
Networking. Two Garmin Marine Network ports for connecting additional GPSMAP displays, GMR radar, GCV scanning sonar modules, and other Garmin marine network devices. NMEA 2000 for engine, autopilot, and vessel data integration. NMEA 0183 input and output for older devices. J1939 port for direct connection to compatible diesel engine networks. HDMI video output for an external monitor. BNC composite video input for analog cameras. USB port for software updates and external storage. The single 12-pin transducer port accepts standard Garmin transducer connectors.
OneHelm digital switching is the feature that lets the chartplotter integrate with compatible third-party digital switching systems (EmpirBus and others). The screen becomes a control surface for boat lighting, pumps, accessories, and other digitally-switched systems alongside the navigation and sonar functions. For boats with modern digital switching, this consolidates control to a single helm display.
Wireless. Built-in Wi-Fi for pairing with the ActiveCaptain mobile app. ActiveCaptain handles smart notifications, software updates, OneChart download access, Garmin Quickdraw Community contour data, and Helm app remote control of the chartplotter. Bluetooth for pairing peripheral devices. ANT+ for connecting Garmin marine watches like the quatix line, gWind wireless transducers, and other ANT+ devices.
Garmin inReach satellite communicator integration. Pair an inReach to the chartplotter and you can compose and send satellite text messages from the chartplotter’s on-screen keyboard. Useful for boats venturing offshore beyond cell coverage where two-way satellite messaging matters for safety and family communication.
Engine connectivity. The unit talks to compatible engines (Yamaha specifically called out, plus other supported NMEA 2000-equipped marine engines) for engine data display directly on the chartplotter screen. RPM, fuel flow, hours, fluid levels, and trim all available without a separate engine display.
What’s in the box. The GPSMAP 1243xsv chartplotter, microSD preinstalled, power cable, NMEA 2000 T-connector and drop cable, bail mount with knobs, flush mount kit with gasket, protective cover, trim piece snap covers, and the documentation pack. Transducer is sold separately because anglers spec the right transducer for their hull and fishing style.
