The Furuno DRS12AX 12kW UHD Digital Radar with 3.5-foot Open Array, Pedestal, and 15M Cable (MPN DRS12AX/3) is Furuno’s X-Class magnetron radar flagship, designed for serious offshore cruising, commercial-traffic operation, and long-range weather detection on NavNet TZtouch, TZtouch2, and TZtouch3 helms. The package includes the redesigned pedestal unit (20 percent lighter than previous Furuno generations), the 3.5-foot open-array antenna, and a 15-meter smart-connector cable for the mast-to-helm run.
What 12 kilowatts of magnetron output actually does. Output power directly determines maximum detection range on small targets, signal-to-noise performance through heavy weather, and the ability to resolve small targets at distances where they matter for collision avoidance and weather routing. At 12kW the DRS12AX reaches the practical detection ranges that smaller radars can’t, sees through rain and weather that washes out lower-power systems, and resolves small targets at distances where they actually matter operationally. Target course and speed vectors are displayed instantly with the press of a button, no waiting for multiple sweeps to compute the track. For collision avoidance in busy waters, the instant vector display turns radar from passive return-watching into active threat assessment. You see where each target is going, not just where it is right now.
Bird Mode. Performance-tuned detection for locating sea birds working bait, with optimized gain and sea clutter settings that distinguish birds from sea-state noise. For offshore sport-fishing operations where bird sightings are the lead indicator for finding bait balls and fish, Bird Mode turns the radar into a fishing instrument. Older radars made you squint at clutter, Furuno’s Bird Mode shows you the birds.
3.5-foot open-array antenna. The antenna size determines beamwidth, and beamwidth determines target separation. The 3.5-foot antenna delivers a narrow horizontal beam that resolves two targets at slightly different bearings as two distinct returns instead of merging them. For commercial-traffic operation, weather routing, and any use where you need to distinguish multiple targets in proximity, the 3.5-foot is the antenna size that justifies the open-array architecture.
Reduced minimum detection range. The DRS12AX detects targets down to 20 meters minimum range, which is genuinely operational for harbor approaches and close-quarters maneuvering. Older 12kW magnetron radars struggled to see anything closer than 50-100 meters because the magnetron transmit pulse fundamentally limits near-field resolution. Updated pedestal design. The redesigned pedestal is 20 percent lighter than previous Furuno 12kW generations, which matters for mast structural loading and high-wind operation. The smart-connector cable simplifies install and maintenance, you don’t have to open the pedestal unit to make the cable connection. Integration. The DRS12AX is designed for the NavNet TZtouch, TZtouch2, and TZtouch3 multifunction display platforms. Full integration includes radar overlay on chart, ARPA target tracking, Fast Target Tracking vector display, Bird Mode and other operating modes, and standard radar controls operating through the TZtouch interface. Not compatible with the older NavNet 3D or earlier NavNet generations, this is a current-generation Furuno helm radar.
Install considerations. The 3.5-foot open array and 12kW pedestal require structural mounting on a mast, radar arch, or hardtop with adequate support for the antenna assembly, rotating mass, and pedestal weight (still significant despite being 20 percent lighter than previous generations). The 15-meter smart-connector cable routes between the mast and the below-deck network connection. The DRS12AX is a 24V DC system, so 12V boats need a converter for the radar supply. Total install is a marine electronics installer day-plus for a clean job. Not casual DIY because the mast mount, cable routing, voltage conversion if needed, and TZtouch commissioning all benefit from professional setup.
