Why a dedicated joystick controller. Most modern boats with marine thermal cameras run camera control through the helm chartplotter / MFD – the chartplotter’s touchscreen handles camera pan / tilt / zoom via on-screen controls. For light recreational use (occasional camera glance, casual scene framing), MFD touchscreen control is fine. For serious camera operation where precision, speed, and reliability matter, dedicated joystick control delivers substantially better operator experience: (1) Tactile precision – a physical three-axis joystick gives the operator continuous variable control that on-screen sliders can’t match. Fine pan movements for target tracking, smooth zoom transitions for scene composition, intuitive simultaneous pan-tilt-zoom for following moving targets. (2) Single-handed operation – the joystick lets you operate the camera with one hand while keeping eyes on the visual scene or radar. MFD touchscreen requires looking at the screen to control camera. (3) Wet / gloved operation – joystick works reliably with wet hands, gloved hands, and in rough water where touchscreen accuracy degrades. (4) Speed – joystick movements happen at the speed of your hand vs the speed of touchscreen taps and drags. For tracking fast-moving targets (other vessels, MOB scenarios), the joystick speed matters.

The three-axis joystick. The joystick handles three axes of camera control simultaneously: pan (left-right rotation – rotates the camera horizontally to scan or aim), tilt (up-down rotation – tilts the camera vertically), and zoom (in / out – changes the camera’s field of view). The joystick is variable-speed – small joystick movements produce slow camera movement, larger movements produce faster camera movement. Practical impact: smooth tracking of moving targets at variable speeds, precise framing of static scenes, and intuitive composition of camera views during operation. The joystick is rugged – designed for repeated heavy use in marine conditions including salt spray, wet operation, and rough water vibration.

2.9-inch color LCD. The integrated 2.9-inch color LCD displays the current camera view directly at the controller. Practical benefit: operate the camera while watching the camera output without having to look at the main helm chartplotter / MFD. For boats where the operator is positioned away from the main helm (cockpit, bow position, secondary helm), the JCU-4’s local display lets them operate the camera independently. The LCD also provides menu access for camera setup, mode selection (thermal palette, scene mode, lens selection on multi-lens cameras), and joystick configuration.

Dimmable LCD and backlit keypad. Both the LCD and the keypad are dimmable to preserve the operator’s night vision during nighttime operations. Marine night navigation depends on the operator’s dark-adapted night vision – eyes that have been in the dark long enough to detect dim visual targets. Bright displays destroy night vision in seconds, leaving the operator unable to see outside the boat for several minutes until eyes re-adapt. The JCU-4 lets you dim both the LCD and the keypad backlighting to the minimum level still useful for operation – preserves night vision while letting you operate the camera in full darkness. Three custom keys. The keypad includes three user-configurable custom keys. Retrofit-friendly mounting. The JCU-4 has the same mounting footprint as the older JCU-2 and JCU-1 controllers. Practical benefit: if you have an existing boat with an older JCU-1 or JCU-2 installed, you can upgrade to the JCU-4 without changing the dashboard mounting hole pattern. Remove the old controller, install the JCU-4 in the same hole using the same mounting screws, and you’re upgraded. No dashboard cutting or replacement required for the upgrade. Connectivity – Ethernet and DC power. The JCU-4 includes two Ethernet ports (RayNet connectors) and a dedicated DC power connector. Two Ethernet ports practical purpose: daisy-chain network connectivity – one port connects to the camera / network upstream, the second port can pass through to another network device (multifunction display, network camera, etc.). Eliminates the need for an Ethernet switch in the camera network. PoE (Power over Ethernet) support means the JCU-4 can be powered through the Ethernet cable from a PoE-equipped network switch – no separate DC power wiring required for that install configuration. The dedicated DC power connector is available for installations where PoE isn’t available or where you prefer separate power.
